About Karen

Karen Knab is a Western New York native and a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the states of New York and California. Karen graduated from the University of Rochester and holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and a post-master’s certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, MN. She has training in multiple family therapy approaches and has post-degree training in a highly effective couples counseling approach, Emotionally Focused Therapy.

Karen also completed training as a Family Constellations facilitator through the Constellation Healing Institute formerly located in Santa Monica, CA. Family Constellations is a healing modality that addresses intergenerational family trauma and its effects on individuals. In addition, she is trained to facilitate Restorative Justice Circles and Peace Circles through the Erie County Restorative Justice Coalition. Circling is a healing modality that can be practiced with individuals in schools, communities, companies, and within the court system.

Working in the counseling field since 2005, Karen gained the majority of her experience working in the area of addiction and recovery. She also has extensive experience working with parents and family members of those who struggle with addiction, alcoholism, or eating disorders. Karen did her initial training at the Hazelden Foundation in Minnesota, one of the largest and most respected treatment centers in the world. From 2007 to 2014 she was the Program Director and primary family counselor at a residential treatment program in Newport Beach, CA. She facilitated group and family counseling sessions regularly for clients diagnosed with substance abuse, eating disorders, and mental health issues.

Since returning to the Western New York area in 2016, Karen has been operating a private practice to see individuals, couples and families. Her practice focuses on helping clients to heal various types of relationship issues, including those stemming from tension with a parent, a child or adult child, other family members, a partner or former partner, and/or coworkers or other colleagues. She is collaborative and straightforward in her approach, working with clients to help them have effective communication, more genuine connections, and improved overall health and well-being.

From 2018-2021 she was the Community Counselor at Buffalo Seminary High School in Buffalo, NY working with students, as well as staff and parents to proactively educate and promote positive mental health in the school community.

Throughout her career, she has presented extensively to small and large groups on topics related to mental health and giving practical guidance for improving both coping and communication skills. She has also acted as a professional consultant, working with treatment programs and clinicians to improve long-term recovery outcomes for their clients and family members.
