Karen Knab is a Western New York native and a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the states of New York and California. Karen graduated from the University of Rochester and holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and a post-master’s certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, MN. She has training in multiple family therapy approaches and is currently pursuing certification in a highly effective couples counseling approach, Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Working in the counseling field since 2005, Karen gained the majority of her experience working in the area of addiction and recovery. She also has extensive experience working with parents and family members of those who struggle with addiction, alcoholism, or eating disorders. Karen did her initial training at the Hazelden Foundation in Minnesota, one of the largest and most respected treatment centers in the world. From 2007 to 2014 she was the Program Director and primary family counselor at a residential treatment program in Newport Beach, CA. She facilitated group and family counseling sessions regularly for clients diagnosed with substance abuse, eating disorders, and mental health issues.
She is a respected and sought-after clinician in the treatment community. She has acted as a professional consultant, working with treatment programs and clinicians to improve their programs and promote increased long-term recovery for their clients and family members. She also has extensive experience presenting to the public about the need for “family recovery” alongside an addict’s recovery.
Since returning to the Western New York area in 2016, Karen is currently operating a private practice to see individuals, couples and families. She has experience with a wide range of mental health, relationship, and addiction issues. She is collaborative and straightforward in her approach, working with clients to help them have effective communication, more genuine connections, and improved overall health and well-being.
